ATHENS | Leader of main opposition SYRIZA, Alexis Tsipras, met on Thursday with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. During the meeting, the Ecumenical Patriarch stated that “we do whatever we can to complete our universal mission” and noted that he will continue holding dialogues with the heads of the other churches and the other monotheistic religions such as Islam and Judaism.
Alexis Tsipras highlighed the importance of Bartholomew’s mission for Europe, while he briefed the Ecumenical Patriarch on issues that he will promote as a candidate for president of the European Comission, specifically regarding the economic crisis and the need for the immediate termination of austerity, as well as for the radical reform of immigration policy of Europe.
The leader of the main opposition came to the meeting, accompanied by the deputy of SYRIZA, Rena Dourou.
The Ecumenical Patriarch arrived in Greece on Wednesday to attend the ceremony for the assumption of the presidency of the European Union by Greece.
Later the same day he met with Government Vice President and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos.
