MELBOURNE | Alphington Grammar School students in Years 9 and 10 have recently returned from their International Trek which saw them visit China, Turkey, Gallipoli and Greece for 5 weeks.
The 46 members of the group put their studies into practice visiting many archaeological and historical sites experiencing numerous cultural events and interacting with the local people directly. The students followed 5 themes throughout their experience focusing on:

The Principal of the school, Dr Vivianne Nikou, joined the students for the last 2 weeks of their travels reflecting on the enormous growth and personal development witnessed in the students. Their ability to navigate maps, develop a budget and manage their money, do their own washing and practice their language skills brought their learning alive.
Dr Nikou said “the 5 week experience to 3 countries was the first of its type in Australia. Our students will be required to have global skills and competencies with strong cultural understanding… what better way to develop independent habits of mind than, to learn by doing”.
The Chairman of School Council, Mr Nick Koukouvitakis was in Crete while the students were visiting the island learning more about its history and the Battle of Crete and retracing many aspects of the Battle. Mr Koukouvitakis helped organise a special meeting with the CEO of the Hania Prefecture, Mr Apostolou Boulgaraki who spoke to the student about Crete and also provided a special morning tea for the group. Each student also received their own show bag of gifts about Crete..
For students who didn’t undertake the International Trip they chose to complete a two week trek of physical and personal challenges from Melbourne through to South Australia, Coober Pedy, Ayers Rock, Kings Canyons and Alice Springs.
Dr Nikou said “Many of our students have not explored the vastness of Australia; especially the interior… a Trek like this one challenged the 48 students physically and emotionally as they learnt more about their own country and themselves”.
It has been an experience of a lifetime for both groups and one that has put Alphington Grammar School on the map in Independent School education.
