Greek-Australian Pioneer Nick Andrianakos Passes at 81

The Greek-Australian community is deeply saddened by the passing of Nick Andrianakos, a cherished businessman, philanthropist, and cultural icon, who died at the age of 81. A true pioneer and generous benefactor, Andrianakos leaves behind an extraordinary legacy of community service, business excellence, and cultural preservation that has left an indelible mark on Melbourne.

He died in Argos, where he had been staying to oversee plans for a new investment in the Argolis region. Andrianakos fell unwell during a meeting and he was rushed by ambulance to the hospital. Tragically, by the time he arrived, he had already passed away. Medical staff performed CPR for an hour in a desperate attempt to revive him, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

Born in the village of Pikerni in Arcadia, Greece, Nick emigrated to Australia in the 1960s, embarking on what he called a “journey of discovery to the lucky country.” Arriving in Melbourne after a month-long voyage on the ship Patris, he began his new life with little more than determination and a dream. He found work at the General Motors factory in Fisherman’s Bend and took on night shifts at local hotels to make ends meet. Within a month of arriving, he met and married his late wife, Anthoula, with whom he built a loving family of four children: Paul, Vicki, Theo, and Kristina.

Through hard work, persistence, and an unwavering belief in the power of relationships, Andrianakos built an empire. In 1973, he began working at a petrol station, and within three years, he purchased his first outlet on Sydney Road in Coburg. This marked the beginning of Milemaker Petroleum, which grew to include 54 outlets across Victoria. His 40-year partnership with Caltex (now Ampol) was built on trust and respect, with many deals sealed with nothing more than a handshake.

In 2016, Andrianakos sold the fuel business assets to Caltex for $95 million but retained the freehold properties, a decision that proved fortuitous. He transitioned into property investment, founding the Nikos Property Group, which now holds a diverse portfolio of commercial, industrial, and residential properties across Australia. His strategic acquisitions, including high-profile deals in Adelaide and Brisbane, cemented his reputation as a savvy investor.

Andrianakos’ success was not just measured in wealth but in the values he upheld. He believed in surrounding himself with good people, taking calculated risks, and always staying true to his word.

Beyond business, Andrianakos was a passionate advocate for the Greek-Australian community. His generosity supported schools, cultural programs, and religious institutions, ensuring that Greek heritage and traditions continued to thrive in Australia. He was a driving force behind the GOCMV, where his contributions funded community centres, events, and initiatives that brought people together.

The Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria (GOCMV) paid tribute to him, stating: “Today, we say goodbye to one of the most cherished members and benefactors of the Greek Community of Melbourne, Nikos Andrianakos—a man whose lifelong dedication to his heritage and unwavering support left an indelible mark on our community.”

Even in his later years, Andrianakos remained connected to his roots. During a visit to Greece in 2021, he proudly showed GOCMV President Bill Papastergiadis the renovation work on a hotel he had acquired in Nafplio, a project he undertook to give back to his homeland. Reflecting on his journey, Andrianakos often said, “Take risks and be respectful and true to your word. You have to always continue to invest too, but be patient and believe in yourself to achieve your goals.”

The GOCMV Board of Directors honoured his memory, saying: “We farewell a dear friend and an extraordinary man. The Board of Directors of the Greek Community of Melbourne will forever honour his memory.”

Nick Andrianakos is survived by his loving family, friends, and a community that will forever cherish his memory.
