Athens is set to host the 39th European Film Awards in January 2027, marking a significant milestone as the first city in Southeastern Europe to hold this prestigious event. This achievement highlights the growing influence of the city within the international film industry and further solidifies its status as a prime destination for film productions.
Haris Doukas, Mayor of Athens, expressed excitement about the city’s role in hosting the event: “It is with great enthusiasm that we will welcome the European Film Awards. Athens is a vibrant and hospitable city, sharing its rich cultural heritage alongside a modern, upgraded image. Our city’s position as a popular destination for the film industry is now officially recognized by the European Film Academy.”
The 39th European Film Awards will take place on January 16, 2027, at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre (SNFCC), following a welcoming event at the Zappeion Hall the day before. The event will bring together international personalities, members of the Academy, nominees, and winners.
Athens has become an increasingly important hub for the film industry, supported by the Athens Film Office, which has facilitated numerous international and domestic productions. In 2024 alone, the office contributed to 28 productions, generating 2,000 jobs and an estimated €40 million in revenue for the local economy.
The proposal to host the awards in Athens was prepared by the Greek Centre for Film, Audiovisual Media and Creation – Creative Greece and submitted to the European Film Academy. The event is supported by a consortium including the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Tourism, and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, among others.
The European Film Awards, first held in Berlin in 1988, promote and support European cinema. The ceremony alternates between cities across Europe and has previously been held in locations like London, Paris, Rome, and Barcelona.
