This morning, I listened to Sussan Ley’s interview on ABC Radio National, and I was struck by her attempt to reposition the Liberal Party. Her comments on Indigenous affairs, increasing women’s participation, and reconnecting with modern Australian values seemed like a genuine effort to bring the party back to the mainstream of national politics.
But the road ahead won’t be easy. With a narrow leadership win over Angus Taylor (29 to 25), key supporters about to retire, and conservative media already attacking her message, Ley faces resistance from within her own ranks.
Groups like Advance Australia are continuing the old culture wars, and the party’s declining membership only makes it easier for hardliners to dominate. The big question is: will Liberal-minded Australians step up to support this shift—or will they leave the future of the party to be decided by its loudest fringes?
