The Polite Cruelty of Silence

A quiet unease runs through Melbourne’s Greek community — a tension not shouted but whispered, spread through private messages, selective invitations, and the quiet burial of reputations.

In his powerful article “CLUB ΦΤΥΑΡΙ,” lawyer and poet Dean Kalimniou dissects the culture of gossip, exclusion, and moral decline that has taken hold within parts of the Greek-Australian community. Writing with rare candour and historical insight, Kalimniou connects the private cruelties of the present with a long tradition of silencing dissent — from the mocking of Thersites in Homer’s Iliad to the exile of Socrates and the condemnation of Saint John Chrysostom.

What emerges is not simply a local critique, but a meditation on truth, fear, and the erosion of παρρησία — the courage to speak freely — within a community that once celebrated dialogue and difference.

The most alarming aspect is how such behaviour now finds amplification online, where slander and insinuation are casually endorsed — even by otherwise respected community figures who, through ignorance or indifference, “like” and thus help legitimise the decay.

“If we must dig,” Kalimniou writes, “let it be for new foundations, not for the graves of reputations.”
