Greece Joins EU Leaders in Urging 30-Day Ukraine-Russia Ceasefire

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has aligned with European Union leaders in a unified call for an immediate 30-day unconditional ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia. This initiative aims to halt hostilities and pave the way for diplomatic negotiations to end the ongoing conflict.

On Saturday, Mitsotakis participated in a high-level teleconference with leaders from France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Poland, who had convened in Kyiv to demonstrate solidarity with Ukraine. The coalition, backed by U.S. President Donald Trump, issued a joint ultimatum to Russian President Vladimir Putin: agree to the ceasefire by Monday or face severe new sanctions and increased Western military support for Ukraine.

“Ukraine has accepted in principle such a proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, but unfortunately Russia has still not accepted it,” Mitsotakis stated. “Therefore, all pressure at the moment must be put on Russia to stop the military attacks on Ukraine, particularly on critical infrastructure, so that we can reach this initial ceasefire and then have more time for Ukraine to negotiate a just and sustainable peace.”

The proposed ceasefire, initially brokered by the United States, seeks to create a window for humanitarian aid and peace talks. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that failure to comply would result in “biting” sanctions targeting Russia’s energy and banking sectors.

Greece has expressed readiness to participate in an international peacekeeping force in Ukraine under specific conditions: the establishment of a formal ceasefire, no deployment on Russian territory, and a clear exit strategy should hostilities resume. Mitsotakis clarified that Greece would not send troops to Ukraine unless these criteria are met.

As the deadline approaches, the international community awaits Russia’s response. The unified stance of EU leaders, including Greece, underscores a concerted effort to bring about a cessation of hostilities and a return to peace in the region.
