The inaugural gathering of Greek Australian Conversations filled Patris in Brunswick East to capacity, marking the launch of a new collective civic initiative within Melbourne’s diverse Greek-Australian community. Conceived as a reflective and inclusive public forum, the initiative seeks to create a space where questions of identity, citizenship and political responsibility can be examined openly and beyond the confines of established community structures.
The first discussion, titled “Indigenous Sovereignty / Republic / Bondi: What Do Greek-Australians Think?”, was moderated by Theo Markos and featured Esther Anatolitis, co-chair of the Australian Republic Movement, alongside George Vassilacopoulos, adjunct member of the Philosophy Program at La Trobe University.
In a Facebook post reflecting on the event, journalist and commentator Kostas Karamarkos argues that its significance lies not only in the themes addressed, but in the creation of a civic space where Greek-Australians can articulate their plural identities within broader national debates on sovereignty, representation and democratic participation.
