eKathimerini: Insulting Ignorance

Τόση ασχετοσύνη ρε φίλοι και φίλες της ΚΑΘΗΜΕΡΙΝΗΣ;

It’s so sad! They are so ignorant, over there in Greece, about the affairs of the “Greek” diasporic communities abroad…

They are so ignorant, even here, in Australia, nowadays, the various Australian governments and bodies don’t seem to know much about us, as Greek/migrant Australians, but this is another story for another time…

Kathimerini is not doing a service to its good brand name, when it publishes stories with inaccurate headings, as well as with content that does not relate to the real societal, political and cultural clout of the organisation mentioned in this news story.

What follows is some basic info for those ignorant and lazy people who wrote and published the story for the English edition of Kathimerini.

1. The Greek descent community of the state of Victoria, with Melbourne as its capital, according to the most recent Australian census in 2021 numbers just over 180.000 people.

2. The Greek Community of Melbourne has roughly 1,000 members.

3. In the February 2022 elections for the board of the GOCM, roughly 620 members turned out to vote, and the winning ticket, Team Papastergiadis, got 55 per cent of the votes cast.

4. The vast majority of the Greek Australian community does not participate in the various institutionally defined (organisations, community media, etc) microcosms. It expresses its identity mostly through the private sphere and if and when it participates in the affairs of wider Australia, the vehicle is he institutional make up of mainstream Australia.
