Melbourne Greeks Demand Justice for Tempi Tragedy

In a demonstration of solidarity, the Greeks who participated in the rally outside the Greek Consulate in Melbourne issued a resolution stating that the Tempi Tragedy was not a mere accident but a foreseeable crime caused by systemic failures, negligence, and corruption. The rally, held in response to the devastating train collision in Greece that claimed the lives of 57 people, was a poignant expression of grief, outrage, and an unwavering demand for accountability.

The resolution, titled Resolution of the Greeks of Melbourne on the Tempi Tragedy, read as follows:

“We, the Greeks of Melbourne, unite our voices with the Greek people and express our rage, sorrow, and indignation over the crime at Tempi, which claimed the lives of dozens of young people. This was not a ‘tragic accident’ but the inevitable outcome of longstanding negligence, corruption, and the criminal indifference of the political establishment.

The blood of our children cries out for justice. Empty apologies, sorrowful statements, and public relations stunts are not enough. This crime was foreseen: unions had warned about the dangers, citizens had protested, yet the authorities ignored these warnings and allowed the train to become a mass grave.

We salute the massive demonstrations across Greece. The thousands of people flooding the streets of Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras, and every corner of the country are living proof that society will not remain silent. From Melbourne, we send a message of solidarity and join this just struggle.

We condemn the coordinated cover-up. From the very first moment, the state and its mechanisms attempted to downplay the incident and mislead public opinion. The controlled media tried to present this crime as ‘human error,’ spreading lies and covering up the real responsibilities. The guilty cannot hide behind a single stationmaster.

Justice must not become a tool for whitewashing responsibilities. We will not allow this crime to be forgotten or buried under political expediency.

We demand:

  • A full investigation and the exemplary punishment of all responsible parties, from top political officials to those directly involved
  • An end to the cover-up and propaganda. The Greek people will not forget
  • The immediate release of all evidence related to the case, without manipulation or censorship
  • An end to the systematic neglect of public infrastructure and the guarantee of citizen safety.

This tragedy will not be forgotten. The lives of our youth are not disposable. If those in power believe we will forget, they are gravely mistaken.

THIS WAS NOT AN ACCIDENT – IT WAS A CRIME

END THE COVER-UP – JUSTICE NOW“
