Melbourne Nakba Rally Highlights Ongoing Palestinian Struggle Amid Controversy

Around 2,000 people gathered in Melbourne on 18 May to mark Nakba Day, remembering the forced displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in 1948 and ongoing challenges faced by Palestinians worldwide.

The rally, organised by Palestinian solidarity groups, was a powerful display of support for Palestinian rights, calling for justice, recognition, and an end to occupation. Demonstrators peacefully marched from the State Library of Victoria to Catani Gardens in St Kilda, raising awareness about the Nakba’s lasting impact on Palestinian communities.

However, the event was overshadowed by controversy after a protester displayed a sign depicting a swastika over the Israeli flag, equating Zionism with Nazism. The sign has been condemned by many, and Victorian Police are currently investigating whether it breaches the state’s legislation banning Nazi symbols in public spaces.

Despite the controversy, attendees emphasised the rally’s broader message: the right of Palestinians to self-determination and the urgent need for international solidarity in their struggle for justice and peace.

Holocaust survivor Andrew Steiner acknowledged the pain caused by such symbols but also called for compassion and understanding, reminding Australians of the importance of standing against oppression in all its forms.

Victoria Police confirmed their investigation is ongoing, with the possibility of referring the matter to federal authorities.

The rally reflects the deep emotions and complexities surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and highlights the ongoing efforts of Australians to support Palestinian voices and rights.
