Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has officially announced that the ruling New Democracy party has nominated Konstantinos Tasoulas as their candidate for the President of the Republic. In a public message, Mitsotakis outlined the qualities that the next president should embody, stressing the importance of prestige, broad acceptance, and experience in public service.
Mitsotakis emphasized that while the President has limited executive powers, their role as the symbol of the nation requires a person who can unite society and inspire trust. He also proposed a constitutional change that would limit the President’s term to a single 6-year period, thus minimizing partisan debates over re-election.
Konstantinos Tasoulas, currently the President of the Greek Parliament, was praised by Mitsotakis for his unifying spirit and leadership. Tasoulas has served as a Member of Parliament for 25 years and has been elected three times as the President of the Parliament with overwhelming support. His political experience, as well as his humble background from Epirus, makes him a suitable candidate to represent the nation, according to Mitsotakis.
The Prime Minister also expressed his gratitude to the current President, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, for her distinguished service and highlighted her contributions to the country. However, he believes that in the current international climate, Greece requires a President with a long-standing record in public affairs and clear political characteristics.
Mitsotakis has called on all political parties to consider Tasoulas’ candidacy based on his qualities of prestige, experience, and character, urging them to support his nomination for the position of the country’s highest office.
