To mark International Greek Language Day, the Pharos Alliance had the privilege of meeting with the Honourable Jenny Mikakos, a former Member of the Victorian Parliament. Serving from 1999 to 2020, Mikakos has been a strong supporter of Pharos since its establishment in 2021. She shared her enthusiasm for the organisation’s ongoing efforts to promote and preserve the Greek language in Victoria.
During her time in government, Mikakos was a staunch advocate for the Greek language, ensuring that Greek language programs were maintained within the public education system. As both a Minister and MP, she played a crucial role in introducing languages, including Greek, into the Early Years curriculum—a significant step in fostering multilingualism from an early age.
At the meeting, Pharos Alliance members were pleased to update Mikakos on the progress they’ve made since their launch. Mikakos was heartened by the strides the organisation has made and reaffirmed her commitment to supporting its mission.
Looking ahead, Pharos remains committed to advocating for the Greek language by working closely with government representatives, community stakeholders, and individuals who share the same passion for preserving this vital cultural heritage.
