A seminar about Themistocles Sofoulis will be presented tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the Greek Centre by Konstantinos Kalymnios, as part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars offered by the Greek Community of Melbourne.
Sofoulis, an archaeologist, social activist, and the architect of the union of Samos with Greece, was a staunch proponent of democracy. Throughout his life, he played pivotal roles in shaping the course of Greek history, including during the First World War, the national schism, the aftermath of the Asia Minor catastrophe, the Metaxas dictatorship, and the German occupation.
Known for his measured, collegial approach, he sought to include all political perspectives in the national conversation. Had he been listened to, it is likely that the Greek Civil War could have been avoided or ended much sooner.
